Making use of the sun at your holiday home

So you’ve chosen your holiday home because it has a wonderful aspect to the sun- perhaps south-facing or almost south-facing. There is a way to make this wonderful free energy from the sun work for you. You may have thought that having solar panels for your home was just for your first home –but why? It may be that your main home is not suitable for solar panels – perhaps the roof is shaded or at the wrong angle – but even if you’ve already invested in solar panels for you r home, there are still good reasons for looking to make the same investment at your holiday home-especially if it is a sun trap!

The advantages of having solar powered electricity are the same for your holiday home:

  • Reduce your electricity bills – well perhaps the time you spend there you feel you don’t use enough electricity – but whether you do or not there are still advantages
  • Under the government’s scheme householders are paid for the electricity whether they use it or not – any surplus to use goes back to the grid – so your solar panels on your holiday home will continue to generate electricity when  it is light whether you are there or not.
  • Though the feed in tariff may reduce, there is still a payback benefit on the initial investment though the payback time is longer
  • Using renewable energy is good for the environment, reduces emissions and saves you money
  • Fitting solar panels for your home increases its attractiveness and value when you come to sell
